For me, the real challenge of data art is not about how to map some abstract and impersonal data into something meaningful ── economists, graphic designers, and scientists are already doing this quite well. The more interesting and, in the end, maybe more important challenge is how to represent the personal living in a data society. If daily interaction with volumes of data and numerous messages is part of our new "data-suybjectivity," how can we represent this experience in new ways? How can new media represent the ambiguity, the otherness, and the multi-dimensinality of our experience beyond the already familiar and "normalized" modernist techniques of montage, surrealism, and the absurd, for example? In short, rather than trying hard to pursue the anti-sublime ideal, data visualization artists should also not forget that art has the unique license to portray human subjectivity ── including its fundamental new dimension of being "immersed in data."

"Pushbutton" convenience was a hallmark of a modern age only recently freed from bodily  work. The industrial button was once understood as an abstraction. The automated operations it triggered were still fresh substitutes for something much more tedious. The postindustrial button frequently lacks a referent in bodily experience, however. This is partly because its logic leads to cumbersome convolution. Hundreds of buttons, or hundreds of expressions for entry by buttons, depart from the realm of comprehensible experience. This is why the household videocassette recorder has become a standard emblem of incomprehensibility.
